Cynthia Garcia - Sweet Springs October Volunteer Spotlight

Our October volunteer of the month completed an internship with us over the summer.  Cynthia Garcia is an Agricultural and Environment Plant Science major at Cal Poly.  We’re sorry to see Cynthia go as she has been an enormous help!

Name: Cynthia Garcia
Current residence: San Luis Obispo
Volunteer since:  2013

What made you decide to do a volunteer internship at Sweet Springs?
I did this volunteer internship to expand my knowledge of plants, seeds, and computer design. I also wanted to enhance my resume and gain valuable experience.

What has been your most memorable experience?
My most memorable experience was when an old tree on the preserve had to be cut down on the spot for safety reasons. It was very sudden and unpredictable, but it had to be done and I enjoyed watching the whole process. It was crazy to see how a tree can be so hollow due to old age and to see something so old and big just fall is a rare thing and I'm glad I was there to witness it.

Do you have any words of wisdom for first-time volunteers?
Have an open mind and be willing to learn new things.  Be excited to put in the work because what you put in is what you get out of the experience so make it worth it.  Always keep in mind it is for a good cause!

What do you do when you're not volunteering?
I play on the Cal Poly Women’s soccer team when I am not volunteering. I love being outside, which is one of the reasons why I am very interested in agriculture.
