Name: Dave Keeling
Current residence: Morro Bay
Volunteer since: 2008
What made you decide to start volunteering at Sweet Springs? When I decreased my work to half time, my conscience reminded me that my primary excuse NOT to volunteer more had disappeared. The outdoors, physical labor at Sweet Springs was a good contrast to my job as a teacher.
What keeps you coming back? After every work day, you can see results. Over a longer period of time, you can see different and more consequential results. In addition, I think volunteering brings out the best in people, and it is exceedingly satisfying to work side-by-side with such nice folks of all ages.
Do you have any words of wisdom for first-time volunteers? Pace yourself. No matter how young you are, your back will be unhappy with you if abuse it.
What do you do when you're not volunteering? I'm now fully retired (yay) and get to play at bird photography far more than in the past.
