Section 44
The following is a listing of key locations this section that may be the most productive based on past experience. Also noted are species that are hard to find within the count circle and are possible within the habitat of this section. Please don't 1imit censussing to just the areas mentioned, but consider them the most important. Cover as much of the section as your time and energy allows. Remember, if your party splits or moves to another section, please begin a new field card. Any constructive comments about this section would be appreciated (i.e. too big or small, access problem, other key locations). Please note actual areas covered. Also note contacts for entrance onto private property.
Elfin Forest / Estuary Audubon Overlook - Scan bay (scope manditory) from overlook watching for geese, Blue-winged Teal, Eurasian Wigeon, Semipalmated Plover, and Short-billed Dowitcher (listen for mellow “tu-tu-tu” call, Long-billed’s call is a sharp “keek”). Watch for Sora, Virginia Rail, and Swamp Sparrow in reeds below.
Residential Streets - Check through sparrow flocks. Investigate areas where groups of trees are found, especially flowering eucalyptus. Elfin Forest - Walk this area. Scan the bay from the two wood deck overlooks. The 13th Street deck is usually best and a scope is essential. Check the feeder at the house at the end of 13th (west side) for Fox Sparrow and others. Watch for Merlin and for Short-eared Owl during the day and at dusk.
