Stenner Creek / Cal Poly fields and ponds
Stenner Creek Road - Check fields for sparrows. Watch and listen for Turkeys and Cassin’s Kingbirds in the vineyards and in Eucalyptus at Cheda Reservoir. Check pond north of road and west of railroad tracks for American Bittern, Green Heron, and rails. From Railroad trestle to end of road (public access) is good for Poorwill at dusk (playing calls is helpful).
Check along Stenner Creek as it parallels Hwy 1 for Chipping Sparrow and other sparrows. Wood Duck and Hooded Merganser has been found at Cheda Reservoir (by eucalyptus grove north of Stenner Creek Road).
Cal Poly ponds - Check all ponds (there are ten) for waterfowl, American Bittern, Green Heron, Sora, Virginia Rail, and Common Moorhen. Look through blackbird flocks for Tri-colored and Yellow-headed blackbird, especially at dairy facilities.
Poly Canyon - Watch for Band-tailed Pigeon in the canyon.
