DESCRIPTION:

Rock outcrops on the South Hills create extensive habitat for rock wrens. Despite a large population density at this location, rock wrens often stay hidden. We will be going at the warmest time of the day when the wrens are more active and with some luck might be inspired to conspicuously proclaim their territory. Bring a picnic lunch to increase time in the field for a better opportunity to see our target species. The number of bird species on the trip list will be low, but there is also a chance for raptors and meadowlarks. We will also enjoy panoramic city views of San Luis Obispo, interesting geology, and serpentine specialist wildflowers. Moderate hike up and down hills with some uneven footing, but the pace will be slow 2 miles.

Suggestions for participants: Bring a lunch, hat, water, binoculars and field guides (if you have them) and dress in layers to accommodate wind and changing weather. Sturdy shoes with good tread are recommended. Sunscreen is advisable. We will be sitting on rocks when we stop for lunch so bring a towel or picnic blanket if that will increase your comfort.

No restroom at trailhead or on the trail; before or after field trip, there is a public restroom a short drive away at Meadow Park. Rain cancels.
