Morro Coast Audubon Society Presents

FIELD TRIP:       Laguna Lake & the Next Level of eBird

DATE:                  Saturday, August 26, 2023

TIME:                   9:00AM-12:00PM

LEADER:            Mark Mushkat

During the Global Big Day event on May 13, many people learned how to use eBird to list their birding sightings. eBird continues to be one of the most important tools in science where dedicated citizens can make valuable contributions, large and small. Data submitted to eBird will shape environmental research and, consequently, environmental policy. The average birder has never had a better and more important way to make an impact on the future of birds and birding.

This is your opportunity to take your eBirding skills to the next level and to prepare for the next GBD in October.  So we’re asking that each participant have an eBird account and have submitted at least 3 eBird checklists prior to this trip.

Trip is limited to 15 participants-Signups will be taken for 24 hours. 15 participants will be randomly selected. The remainder will be put on standby status in case of cancellations. Your eBird User name or eBird Email address is required to register. Only registered people may attend.

DESCRIPTION: We’ll bird the park’s trees and meadows looking for migrating songbirds, flycatchers, waterfowl and raptors.  The open space and power poles are good for raptors. Marshy areas can be productive for warblers, wrens, munias and the lake offers the usual suspects and perhaps a surprise.  The trail is flat and we will walk approximately 1.0-1.5 miles.

Bring a hat, water, snacks, sunscreen, binoculars and field guides (if you have them) and dress in layers to accommodate wind and changing weather. Restrooms are available. Rain cancels.

ADA Accessible: Yes

Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate
