Morro Coast Audubon Society Presents

FIELD TRIP:        Fall Global Big Day at Oso Flaco Lake

DATE:                  Saturday, October 14, 2023

TIME:                   8:30 AM - 3:00 PM

LEADER              Mark Mushkat

Morro Coast Audubon Society’s Field Trip Committee invites you to celebrate Fall Global Big Day (GBD). Sponsored by Cornell’s eBird, tens of thousands of people go birding on a single day and enter their records into eBird. The final tally often exceeds 7,000 species—nearly three-quarters of the world’s bird species in a single day.  Join Mark Mushkat and our two young Hot Shot birders at Oso Flaco, where they will offer in-the-field training on eBird. The eBird app is free and you can install it on your home computer and/or your mobile device. You must have an eBird account to participate in this Field Trip. Click HERE to create an account.

This Trip is limited to 17 participants - Signups will be taken for 24 hours or until the trip is full. Participants will be randomly selected. The remainder will be put on standby status in case of cancellations.Your eBird User name or eBird Email address is required to register. Only registered people may attend.

We will begin in the prime willow habitats looking for returning warblers and other migrants. Enjoy close views of waterfowl and occasional bitterns and rails from the boardwalk over Oso Flaco Lake and marsh. We will continue to the beach in search of shorebirds, gulls, and sea ducks. Expect 3 miles of slow walking through riparian woodland, across the lake boardwalk, into the coastal sage scrub, and to the open sandy beach.  Walking is on a level trail, wooden boardwalk, and sand continuing to the beach.

This is a long 6 hour day. Come prepared with water, lunch, snacks, hat, sunscreen, binoculars and field guides (if you have them) and dress in layers to accommodate wind and changing weather. Sturdy shoes are recommended. Restrooms are available at the trailhead. There will be a break for lunch at picnic tables. Rain cancels.

Leaders will keep the official eBird list and share it to your eBird list after the GBD is over. This will make you part of the hundreds of thousands of citizen scientists the world over participating in this endeavor for the birds.

ADA Accessible: Yes, for walk-in trail and boardwalk only.

Registration and RSVP to confirmation Required!

Experience Level: All Levels Welcome
